What Is Your Why?
Once you have the answer to that question, all of the other questions you face as you prepare your business plan for this New Year will fall into place. Settle the ‘why’ question and obstacles you encounter pertaining to the vision, mission, and purpose of your organization will not seem as daunting. Responses that, in the past, seemed haphazard and disjointed will now be cohesive affirmations of who your company is and what you have to offer your customer base. Your ‘why’ provides the answer for any who, what, where, when, and how questions you’ll face as you set goals for 2017 and beyond.
We all want to connect with our customers. This was illuminated for me during the opening monologue of ‘Collateral Beauty,’ featuring Will Smith. His character, Howard, is the owner of a successful advertising agency in New York. He is addressing his team about three abstractions that are paramount to connecting customers with their client’s products: Love, Time, and Death.
At Woodstock Media Group we do not deal with concepts such as difficult as love or death. Our focus is on ‘time’ and how to use it the most effective way possible to help you connect with your customers. At the beginning of ‘Collateral Beauty,’ Howard understood the why but he was not content to simply know it. He took the time to share it. Remember to continually share the ‘why’ with your team. Talk about it regularly. Reference it when you present new ideas. Stick to it when the economic climate proves difficult to navigate. Henry Ford said, ‘Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.’ The ‘why’ will hold your organization and your staff together when things get difficult. It will keep the feet of your organization firmly planted on the ground as you reach for the stars. Your ‘why’ will also keep you on track as new opportunities arise and provide a clarity that will make decisions easier.
If you know the ‘why’ behind your organization – well done! If you don’t, take the time right now to define it. Synthesize all the information you have into a core philosophy for your organization. Determining your why is the most important decision you can make heading into this year.
